What is a survivor pool?
A survivor pool — you may know it as a last man standing pool, an eliminator, or a knockout pool — runs on the simplest question in football: can you name one winner this week? Every member picks a single team to win its game outright. No point spreads, no ranking, no filling out the whole slate. Get it right and you move on to next week. Get it wrong and you are out — or down a life, if your pool plays with more than one. The field shrinks every week until one person is left, and that person takes the season.
The no-repeat-team rule
The rule that makes the format is this: each team can only be used once per season. Pick the Chiefs in week 1 and they are gone for your remaining weeks — even the week they draw the worst team in the league. Survival and value are different goals. The favorite most likely to win this week is rarely the right pick, because you may need that team more in a week with no good options. Before week 1, sketch the whole season: circle the weeks with an obvious standout and the weeks with none, and save your strongest teams for the barren ones.
In a big pool, consider zigging when everyone zags — picking with the crowd means sharing your fate with half the field, while a slightly riskier pick you hold alone is worth more when it lands. What happens if everyone is eliminated in the same week?
